Career Development Program

Future-Proofing Your Science Career

Science careers are full of possibility—but they’re also full of uncertainty. Funding cycles shift, contracts end, priorities evolve. To thrive in this environment, you need more than technical expertise: you need a strategy. Future-Proofing Your Science Career is a three-part series designed to help participants build a career that’s resilient to change and aligned with their professional identity. Through presentations that broaden perspective, workshops that turn insight into action, and coaching that provide accountability and support, participants learn how to define their brand, align opportunities with it, and communicate it powerfully.

Part I: Clarifying Your Professional Brand

Part II: Leveraging Your Brand to Uncover Opportunities

Part III: Communicating Your Brand

**All programs are tailored to your organization’s needs, budget, and timeline. Some organizations choose one of the following formats, but many choose all three!

Presentation Series

  • Part I

In today’s scientific landscape, technical expertise alone is no longer enough. Research careers are increasingly shaped by external pressures: funding uncertainty, shifting institutional and national priorities, short-term contracts, and growing expectations for interdisciplinary and international collaborations. In this environment, how you present yourself and communicate your work can be just as important as the work itself.

But your professional brand is not just how others see you, it’s also how you see yourself. It reflects your values, strengths, and aspirations, guiding the choices you make and shaping the story you tell. A clear brand helps you stay aligned with what matters most to you while making it easier for others to understand your unique contributions and potential.

In this engaging and thought-provoking presentation, you will learn what a professional brand is, why it matters in today’s scientific environment, and how it can be used to clarify your direction, expand your network, and open new doors. You will leave with a fresh perspective on your professional identity and practical ways to start shaping a brand that reflects both who you are and where you want to go.

  • Part II

In today’s unpredictable research landscape, many scientists are rethinking what it means to grow a meaningful, sustainable career. Instead of following a fixed path or waiting for opportunities to appear, researchers are learning how to recognize and create options that align with their identity.

In this interactive session, we’ll explore future-proofing from two essential timelines: the short-term, where having a strategic Plan B can help you stay adaptable during change or uncertainty; and the long-term, where defining your personal vision of career success helps guide you toward a fulfilling destination. We’ll use the lens of your professional identity/brand (your unique combination of values, interests, and skills) to explore three distinct career journey approaches and three practical strategies for identifying your next opportunity.

You’ll leave with greater clarity about your direction, a framework for evaluating opportunities, and the confidence to make career decisions that align with both your short-term needs and long-term goals.

  • Part III

Communicating your professional brand is about more than job applications—it’s about how you tell your story across every stage of your career. From a resume or CV to a LinkedIn profile or personal website, from networking conversations to high-stakes interviews, your brand needs to come through in different formats. This session explores how to craft a clear, consistent story that highlights your values, interests, and skills while adapting to different audiences.

We’ll walk through three major contexts for storytelling:

*Written - permanent (e.g. resumes, cover letters, emails)

*Digital - dynamic (e.g. LinkedIn profiles & professional websites)

*Verbal - live (e.g. conferences, interviews, negotiations, panels)

Through real-world examples and sector-based comparisons, you’ll see how the same brand can be communicated in multiple ways—whether you’re applying for a job, competing for a promotion, or seeking funding. You’ll walk away with practical strategies to ensure your brand isn’t just defined, but also seen, heard, and remembered.

Workshop Series

  • Part I

You may have contributed to top-tier publications, collaborated on multi-million dollar grants, and even helped launch a rocket into space, but how much time and effort have you invested in building your brand lately?

In a particularly competitive and evolving research landscape, your professional brand is one of your most powerful tools. Your brand shapes how others perceive your value and how you make career decisions that influence your long-term fulfillment and well-being.

This hands-on workshop will walk you through the process of building your own professional brand. You will define your core values, uncover your genuine interests, and identify your distinguishing skills, while also acknowledging the skills you want to develop—all in the context of your broader, long-term life goals. We will also begin connecting these elements into a clear and compelling message, so you walk away from this session with greater clarity about who you are as a professional and what you want in your career. This foundation will help you make more informed decisions and attract well-aligned career opportunities that support your aspirations in both work and life.

  • Part II

You’ve done the hard work of building a professional brand—now it’s time to put it to use. Whether you're exploring a new role, preparing for a pivot, or simply staying proactive in an uncertain funding environment, this hands-on workshop will help you turn your brand into an actionable strategy.

Using your top values, interests, and skills as a compass, you’ll explore three key strategies for identifying and pursuing well-aligned career opportunities: searching, networking, and pitching. Through guided exercises and collaborative discussion, you’ll experiment with ways to use your brand to discover and/or create well-aligned career opportunities.

You’ll walk away with a clearer understanding of what you're looking for right now, where to find it, and how to position yourself in a way that feels both authentic and strategic, plus a shortlist of next steps that move your career forward with intention.

  • Part III

It’s one thing to understand your professional brand, it’s another to translate it into a powerful resume and cover letter that appeals to the reviewer. In this hands-on workshop, you’ll take concrete steps to do just that.

With guided exercises and peer feedback, you’ll identify the most relevant elements of your brand to emphasize for a given opportunity, draft resume bullet points that highlight value, not just tasks, and shape a cover letter that tells a cohesive and compelling story.

Furthermore, you’ll leave with a repeatable process for tailoring future applications, and increased confidence that your materials reflect both your brand (i.e. your ‘deliverables’) and the likely evaluation criteria (i.e. the organization’s ‘desirables’).
